Water Carryover: Why Wet Spin Disappears in Steps
Albuquerque is a dry place, which is exactly why this note exists. Players here get so little practice at wet contact that when it happens they read the result as a swing failure. It is not. It is a material problem with a fairly sharp threshold, and once you know where the threshold sits you can plan around it.
Carryover, defined the way we use it
When a clubface meets a ball, the two surfaces are in contact for something under half a thousandth of a second. Whatever liquid is sitting on either surface at that moment has to go somewhere in that time. Most of it is thrown clear or driven into the grooves. A film survives, gets trapped between the cover and the face, and that trapped film is what we mean by carryover.
While carryover stays below a certain thickness the face still makes enough dry contact with the cover to shear it and generate spin. Above that thickness the cover is riding on water and the club has nothing to grip. There is not much of a middle.
That is why the loss is step-shaped. People expect a slope, because most equipment effects are slopes. This one is closer to a cliff with a slightly rounded lip.
What we measure and how
Every scoring session includes a damp block, weather permitting or not, because it can be done in the bay with a spray bottle. Eight shots dry, eight with a measured spray on the face only, eight with the ball wetted as well, all with the same club, the same ball model and no gap longer than a couple of minutes so nothing about the player changes.
The figures below are medians from paired readings taken during scoring sessions across four seasons, expressed as a percentage of the same player's dry spin with the same club. They are not laboratory numbers and the spread inside each cell is wide. The pattern is what matters.

Read across the bottom two rows and the point of the note is visible. A fresh face loses about a quarter of its spin when everything is wet. A rounded one loses more than half. The wear that a dry test cannot detect at all is the wear that decides what happens on a damp morning.
Why a dry fitting hides this. In dry conditions the grooves are barely being asked to do their job, because there is nothing in the way for them to clear. A worn wedge and a new one can produce nearly the same dry number and behave completely differently the moment moisture appears. This is the single strongest argument for running a damp block in every scoring session.
Where the step sits, and what moves it
Three things push the threshold in the direction you do not want.
Crest condition. The biggest single factor and the one covered at length in the face abrasion note. A sharp crest shears the film. A rounded one lets it survive.
Groove packing. A groove full of dried dirt has no volume left to accept water. The face can be in perfect condition and behave like a worn one because there is nowhere for the film to go. This is the only item on the list that is free to fix.
Cover material. Softer urethane covers deform into the face and squeeze more of the film out sideways. A firm two-piece ball does less of that. The gap between ball models in the wet is larger than the gap between them dry, which is worth knowing before you switch to something cheap for the winter.
What this means on a course here
Rain is not the main exposure in central New Mexico. The main exposure is the first two hours after sunrise on an irrigated course, and the afternoon half hour during the monsoon window when a cell has passed through and the sun is already back out. Both of those produce a wet face and a wet ball, which is the second-worst row in the table.
The practical consequence is that early tee times and July afternoons are when your approach shots release, and the yardage you use in the middle of a dry October afternoon is wrong for both of them. Not by a little. A wedge that stops in two paces at four in the afternoon will run out to six at seven in the morning with the same strike.
Three things worth doing
Carry a towel that is actually dry. Obvious, universally ignored. A damp towel moves water around instead of removing it, and the face is the surface that matters, not the ball. Wipe the face between every shot on a dewy morning.
Brush the grooves before the round, not after. Dirt dries overnight into something close to concrete. Sixty seconds with a nylon brush and water restores groove volume you were about to need.
Change the shot, not the swing. On a wet morning to a back pin, the ball is going to release and no amount of effort will stop it. Land it shorter and let it run rather than trying to spin something that physically cannot spin.
