The Spin Window Is Different Up Here

Low-spin driver fittings are fashionable. At this elevation they are also the fastest way to build a tee ball that runs out of altitude and falls short of where it should.

What Thin Air Does to a Tee Ball

Two forces act on a golf ball in flight: drag, which slows it down, and lift, which holds it up. Both weaken in thinner air, and they do not weaken by the same proportion at every spin rate.

The practical result is that a ball spinning near the bottom of the usual range gets less help staying airborne here than it would at sea level. It reaches its apex and then descends steeply rather than gliding, and the total carry disappoints even though the ball speed was fine.

So the target window at this elevation sits slightly higher than the one you will read about in national equipment coverage. How much higher depends on your speed and your attack angle, which is exactly what a session is for.

The correction runs both ways. Players who arrive here from lower elevations often already own a driver built to shed spin. That build is not wrong, it is just fitted for a denser sky, and the usual fix is loft and shaft profile rather than a new head.

Attack Angle Before Anything Else

How steeply or shallowly you arrive at the ball controls more of your launch and spin than loft does. We measure it first, and if it is significantly negative, we deal with tee height and ball position before we start swapping heads, because otherwise every subsequent test is being run at the wrong starting point.

This is also the block where a fitting occasionally turns into a short conversation about the setup rather than a purchase. That conversation is included.

Face Angle Is a Fitting Variable, Not a Confession

A driver head that sits slightly closed at address is a legitimate tool for a player who leaks the ball right, and one that sits open is a legitimate tool for the opposite. Adjustable hosels move loft and face angle together, which players often do not realise, and that interaction gets documented on your card so nobody undoes it by accident later.

Shaft Profile, Measured

Our shaft library is organised by measured bend profile — butt, mid and tip stiffness read on the bench — rather than by the letter printed on the graphic. Two shafts labelled stiff can differ more from each other than a stiff differs from a regular in another brand.

Weight comes first, then the profile that suits how abruptly you load the club. A player with a sudden transition and a player with a long, smooth one can need the same weight and opposite profiles.

Testing Outdoors Whenever We Can

Driver sessions run on the grass strip if the wind is under about twelve miles an hour. Watching the ball land is worth a great deal, and the launch monitor becomes a record of what happened rather than a substitute for seeing it.

More Loft Than Expected

Players routinely play a driver a degree or two weaker than the one that produced their best corrected carry. Thin air widens that gap rather than closing it.

Shorter Than Stock

Stock driver length has crept upward. Trimming half an inch frequently tightens the strike pattern enough to gain carry despite the lost swing radius.

Keep the Head, Change the Shaft

A meaningful share of sessions end with the existing head reshafted. It is cheaper, and the card shows the numbers that justified it.
