The Letter on the Label Is Not a Specification
No standards body defines what stiff means. Two shafts wearing the same letter can measure further apart than a stiff and a regular from a different maker.
What Gets Measured Before a Shaft Enters the Library
Every shaft we stock is read on the bench and filed by its measured behaviour. The label goes on the shelf tag as a courtesy, not as a sorting key.

Weight Before Flex, Always
If we can only get one variable right, it is weight. Weight is what determines whether you can repeat a swing, and a player carrying a shaft thirty grams too light will produce a scattered pattern no amount of profile tuning can tidy up.
The order of operations in every session here is weight first, profile second, then length, then the small stuff. Sessions that get run the other way around end up chasing their tails.
Three Zones, Not One Number
A shaft does not have a single stiffness. It has a butt section that mostly governs feel and how the club responds to the transition, a middle that shapes the overall bend, and a tip that has the largest influence on launch and spin.
Reading all three is why we can say something useful like "this one will launch lower without feeling boardy in your hands," which is not a claim any single letter can support.
The frequency trap. A single cycles-per-minute reading blends all three zones into one number. Two shafts can share a frequency and behave nothing alike. We record frequency because it is useful for matching within a set, not because it describes a shaft.
Torque Is Not a Quality Grade
Low torque is marketed as premium. It is not better or worse, it is a trade. Less twist means more stability on off-centre strikes and a firmer, sometimes harsher feel. More twist softens the impact sensation and can help a player who finds stiff shafts unpleasant to hit.
Torque also interacts with weight in a way that catches people out: a light shaft with low torque often feels much stiffer than its label suggests.
Tip Trimming Changes the Shaft You Bought
Most shafts are supplied longer than needed and are trimmed at both ends. Trimming from the tip stiffens the section that most influences launch. Two identical shafts trimmed differently are, for practical purposes, two different products.
The manufacturer's trim chart is a reasonable starting point and nothing more. Our build slips record the actual trim used on your club, so a future rebuild reproduces the club you liked rather than an approximation of it.
Set Consistency Matters More Than Any Single Club
Within an iron set, the useful goal is that the shafts behave as a continuous progression. A set assembled from stock components can have a step that makes one club feel foreign, and players usually blame the head. We check the progression across the set and note any outlier on the card.
